Piano Lesson in Progress - (Kodaly Reading). ‘Magenta’ from the ‘Colour Suites’
This is a portion of a real piano lesson.
It's so useful to watch a real lesson happening with a real student. In particular, this video is a wonderful way to observe the Kodaly method applied specifically to learning the piano with a student who isn’t a beginner.
This student began her learning with the PianoForte Method and has worked through Levels 1 - 3 and the Major Scales book. She is now in the level called Beyond Level 3 (found in the printable membership) and has played several of the pieces in this level. In this video she is learning a piece called 'Magenta' from the 'Colour Suites'.
This student began her music journey with me as a preschooler in a Kodaly/Orff class I taught. She started private piano lessons when she was four years old (although the first year was spent part-time on zoom because of the pandemic, so progress in that first year was slower than normal). She has been having private lessons for about 4.5 years. She has a 30 minute lesson once a week and practices regularly 4 or 5 times a week.
She has performed in lots of recitals and has played a lot of repertoire at this level which has given her a really strong musical foundation. Later in the year I will assign pieces such as In the Garden by Maykapar, Arabesque by Burgmuller, Minuet in G from the AMB Notebook, and Sonatina Op. 36 No. 1 by Clementi. In a year or so she should be comfortably playing at a Grade 3 standard (ABRSM).
