The First Piano Lesson - PianoForte Level One, Lesson One

What does it mean to teach “Sound before Sight”?

Put simply, it means to provide musical experience for children before they read notes. The first lesson in the PianoForte method introduces children to the piano from this point of view. By the end of the first lesson they can sing and play a simple song in several different keys and understand the following fundamental concepts:

  • Right hand and left hand

  • Finger numbers

  • How to use the voice to sing high and low pitches

  • High and Low on the piano keyboard

  • Basic piano geography - black and white keys and the groups of black keys

  • The Solfa syllables So & Mi

Learn how to teach this first lesson in the following video:

This method works for all ages, even the littlest students learn to play the piano quickly with PianoForte. However, if you have a really young student, four, five or six years old, it is sometimes useful to supplement the method with additional songs that help give them more aural experience.

Whenever possible we should b e teaching sound before sight :-)

The following video and FREE DOWNLOAD demonstrate a song called “The Mouse” which is a perfect addition to the first piano lesson.
